Artist’s Statement

“Having lived in the city around buildings and people for the last 14 years, I think I enjoy the imaginary retreat to the landscape when I go to the studio. I grew up in small-town rural Massachusetts, by ponds and rivers and near farms, so I think it’s not too much of a reach to say that that’s part of who I am, that those places are part of a vivid and colorful visual memory that I subconsciously draw from. It shows in the way I choose my colors, make marks and move paint around. But being in the city exposes me to more people, cultures, movement, color, sounds and less predictability, which I thrive on and love, and that shows up in my work in other ways.

Since the age of 28, I have been fostering a relationship with Jesus, and feel most connected to him when something visual is part of the experience of prayer. God knows this about me, often giving me images to go on when I pray about things or for people. This has happened in dramatic ways more recently during a time of loss and suffering. All these factors play a role in my work. In the big picture, I think it’s what I’ve seen, what I currently see, and what God assures I will see that inform my imagery.”

Deidre (Sullivan) Tao received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting and Visual Design from University of Massachusetts Dartmouth in 1993. After working in commercial and trade arts for ten years, she began painting abstract landscapes about four years ago. She lives with her husband and son in Cambridge near her studio in Central Square.
